Biography

Known as “the Lion of Lebanon”, Samir Bannout won the Mr. Olympia title in 1983. At that time, only 6 men had held this most prestigious title since the contest was first introduced in 1965. Many of them, obviously, held the title for several years, Bannout won it just once, a distinction shared with Mr. Olympia Chris Dickerson. Samir has appeared on the covers of many fitness and bodybuilding publications, including Strength and Health, MuscleMag International, Muscle Digest, Flex, Muscle Training Illustrated, Muscle and Fitness, Muscle Up, IronMan and Muscular Development magazines.

Samir Bannout first moved to Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. He competed at the amateur level and achieved IFBB pro status by winning his light-heavyweight class at the 1979 IFBB World Amateur Championships. By this time Samir had already relocated to Santa Monica, California. Bannout took 4th place at the 1982 Mr. Olympia contest and returned the following year to finally take home the title in 1983. The contest was held in Munich, Germany that year and the trophy awarded him is called a “Sandow” named after Eugen Sandow.

The extreme muscular definition that Bannout was able to achieve in his lower back region helped coin the term “Christmas tree” when referring the shape made visible during a back pose on the competition stage.

After placing 6th at the 1984 Olympia, he was suspended for three years by the IFBB as punishment for his participation at the rival federation, WABBA’s, World Championship competition.

Samir Bannout was never able to get a top six placing again at a Mr. Olympia contest despite competing at the event many more times. In 1990 he won his second IFBB pro show, the IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Invitational. His professional career lasted for 17 years.

Today Samir Bannout lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife Randa and three children Lea,Jesse,Sergio. He was inducted to the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2002.

Bodybuilding career

Dickerson was born to Mahala Ashley Dickerson as the youngest of three triplets. Dickerson studied music and is an accomplished opera singer. His bodybuilding career spanned thirty years. He was known for both his heavily muscled, symmetrical physique and his skills on the posing dais.

Dickerson first entered competition in 1965 by taking third place at that year’s Mr. Long Beach competition. He was not only the first African-American Mr. America, but also the oldest winner, at age 43, of the IFBB Mr. Olympia contest.

Dickerson is one of the world’s most titled bodybuilders. He trained for many of his most important competitions in the 1980s with bodybuilding great Bill Pearl. Dickerson was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2000.

Today, Dickerson is living in Florida where he still trains, conducts seminars, and corresponds with today’s athletes.

Zane received a B.S. (Bachelor of Science degree) in Education from Wilkes University in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania in 1964. For 13 years, he taught mathematics and chemistry while living in Florida and California. Later he earned a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts degree) in psychology from Cal State LA in 1977. Finally, he was awarded a Master’s degree in Experimental Psychology from Cal State SB, California in 1990.

Bodybuilding career

Zane is a three-time Mr. Olympia (1977 to 1979). His reign represented a shift of emphasis from mass to aesthetics. Zane’s proportionate physique featured the second thinnest waistline of all the Mr. Olympias (after Sergio Oliva),with his wide shoulders making for a distinctive V-taper. He stood at 5’9″ and had a competition weight of 187-195 pounds when he won Mr Olympia (He weighed over 200 lbs when he competed in the 60s). Zane is one of only three people who have beaten Arnold Schwarzenegger in a bodybuilding contest (1968 Mr Universe in Miami, FL) and one of the very few Mr. Olympia winners under 200 pounds. Overall, he competed for over 20 years (retiring after the 1983 Mr Olympia contest) and won Mr America, Mr Universe, Mr World and Mr Olympia throughout his illustrious career.

He has written many courses and books about bodybuilding. In 1994, Zane was inducted into the 1st annual Joe Weider Hall of Fame. He received the Arnold Schwarzenegger lifetime achievement award at the 2003 Arnold Classic for his dedication and long-time support of the sport. He was given the nickname “The Chemist” due to his Bachelor of Science degree and, as he puts it: “Back in the day I took a lot of supplements and tons of amino acids. Still do. But back then it was pretty unusual. That’s how I got the nickname The Chemist.” There was also a perception that his nickname was given because he was very scientific in reaching his peak on the exact day of competition, year after year.

In 1985, Frank and his wife Christine owned and operated Zane Haven in Palm Springs, CA where they successfully conducted one-on-one sessions with clients who wish to possess a symmetrical physique. Zane’s own bodybuilding formula was B=EARN (Total Bodybuilding = Exercise x Attitude x Rest x Nutrition)and this has always been emphasized to every single client since he began this center. Today, the Zanes live in San Diego, CA and his learning center is now called Zane Experience.

In 2005, Frank Zane played the IFBB Announcer and worked as the consulting producer in the movie “See Arnold Run.” As of 2006, Zane currently runs his own website, appears at seminars and book signings, and offers personal weightlifting sessions with his program called “The Zane Experience” in San Diego. He is still in fantastic shape today, at age 67.

Columbu was born in Ollolai, Sardinia (Italy). Starting out his athletic career as a boxer, Columbu progressed into the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, powerlifting and later bodybuilding, winning the title of Mr. Olympia in 1976 and 1981. At 5 feet and 5 inches in height (some magazines reported as short as 5’3″), Columbu is shorter than most of his bodybuilding competitors, but that did not prevent him from achieving widespread success.

Columbu competed in the 1977 World’s Strongest Man competition and was actually in first place. During the Refrigerator race, with Franco ahead, suddenly he stumbled, and national television showed Franco’s leg becoming grotesquely dislocated and he collapsed. That ended his participation in the World’s Strongest Man contest. In the end, he finished in fifth place. He received a reported $1 million in compensation for his injury. [1]

It took six hours of surgery to remove all the muscle and fix his leg. Doctors told him he would never walk again, but Columbu fully recovered in three years.[citation needed] After Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comeback victory in the 1980 Mr. Olympia, Franco followed suit and won the 1981 Mr. Olympia.

Columbu is a long time friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger, whom he met in Munich in 1965 and competed against in several international-level bodybuilding competitions. For the Mr. Olympia competitions however, he competed in the under 200 lb (90.7 kg) category, whereas Schwarzenegger was in the over 200 lb category. The final champion was determined by a pose down between the two class winners. The IFBB has since abandoned weight classes. Arnold and Franco were inseparable during the early to mid 1970′s and frequently trained together.

From the time he arrived in America in 1969, Franco Columbu was considered one of the world’s strongest men. He held a number of powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting world records. He also performed a strongman act in which he routinely popped a hot water bottle by inflating it orally, lifted vehicles on stage (while someone else was changing a tire) and deadlifted over 700 lbs for repetitions.

Acting career

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Columbu has also made intermittent minor forays into acting. Appearing alongside Arnold in Pumping Iron, he has also appeared in cameo roles in Conan the Barbarian, The Terminator, The Running Man and starred in his own films such as Beretta’s Island. He also did TV commercials; most notably, Vitalis (“the pump”). The Streets of San Francisco (1977) Dead Lift with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In the Arnold Schwarzenegger film Last Action Hero, the words “A Franco Columbu film” appear on the screen at the beginning of Jack Slater IV (a film within the film) as a tribute to Columbu. In the opening scenes of Conan the Barbarian, Columbu plays a ‘pictish scout’, complete with mustache, wig and blue body-paint. In The Terminator, Columbu plays the infiltrating Terminator in Reese’s flashback/dream in which the picture of Sarah Connor is destroyed by fire. The Columbu Terminator also features as a boss character in the Terminator 3 video game.

Before joining the police force, Gustav Schwarzenegger was a military officer, and he ran his household in strict military fashion. Both Arnold and Meinhard were required to get up before sunrise to tend to their chores. After chores came a rigorous exercise routine, followed by breakfast. Gustav also instilled a love of sports in his sons. Meinhard, who died when he was twenty-three years old in a car accident, was a boxing champion. Arnold showed promise as a soccer player. It was while performing exercises to strengthen his legs for soccer that Schwarzenegger turned to the sport that would eventually make him famous: bodybuilding.

Arnold Schwarzenegger pursued weightlifting and bodybuilding with a passion. He trained for hours a day, both at a local gym and at home where he set up a training area in a room that had no heat. He also studied anatomy and nutrition to understand how to become physically fit. His parents worried that he was obsessed with training, but Schwarzenegger had his eyes on a goal; that goal was to leave his little village behind and become a success in America.

“I learned something from all these years of lifting and training hard…. What I learned was that we are always stronger than we know.”

Schwarzenegger first gained fame as a bodybuilder. One of the first competitions he won was Junior Mr. Europe. He would go on to compete in and win many bodybuilding (as well as some powerlifting) contests, including 4 NABBA Mr. Universe wins and 7 Mr. Olympia wins, a record which would remain until Lee Haney won his eighth straight Mr. Olympia title in 1991. In 1967 Schwarzenegger won the Munich stone lifting contest in which a stone weighing 508 German pounds, approximately 560 English pounds, is lifted between the legs while standing on two foot rests. Arnold broke the existing record, winning the contest. Schwarzenegger’s goal was to become the greatest bodybuilder in the world, which meant becoming Mr. Olympia. His first attempt was in 1969 where he lost to three-time champion Sergio Oliva. However Schwarzenegger came back in 1970 and convincingly won the competition. Schwarzenegger continued to dominate in the 1971, 1972, and 1973 competions, winning the Olympia with no real competition. In 1974, Schwarzenegger was once again in top form and won the title for the fifth consecutive time opposite Lou Ferrigno, who was the first possible threat to Schwarzenegger’s reign since Oliva. After the 1974 Olympia, Schwarzenegger announced his retirement from professional bodybuilding. However, George Butler and Charles Gaines convinced him to compete one more time so they could make the bodybuilding documentary called Pumping Iron. Schwarzenegger had only three months to prepare for the competition after losing significant weight to appear in the film Stay Hungry with Jeff Bridges. Ferrigno proved to not be a threat and a lighter than usual Schwarzenegger convincingly won the 1975 Olympia. After being declared Mr. Olympia for a sixth consecutive time Schwarzenegger once again retired from competition.

However, Schwarzenegger came out of retirement once more to compete in the 1980 Mr. Olympia. Mike Mentzer was defeated in this competition, despite being on his best ever form (a fact which caused him to leave the world of bodybuilding). Schwarzenegger was a late entry and won with only eight weeks of preparation. At the time, this lead to some controversy, some claiming that the Olympia had become a “popularity contest” rather than an objectivly judged competition. Schwarzenegger is considered among the most important figures in the history of bodybuilding, and his legacy is commemorated in the Arnold Classic annual bodybuilding competition. Schwarzenegger has remained a prominent face in the bodybuilding sport long after his retirement, in part due to his ownership of gyms and fitness magazines. He has presided over numerous contests and awards shows. For many years he wrote a monthly column for the bodybuilding magazines Muscle & Fitness and Flex. Shortly after being elected Governor, he was appointed executive editor of both magazines in a largely symbolic capacity. The magazines agreed to donate $250,000 a year to the Governor’s various physical fitness initiatives. The magazine MuscleMag International has a monthly two page article on him and refers to him as “The King”. Schwarzenegger’s first political appointment was to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, on which he served from 1990 to 1993. He was nominated by George H. W. Bush, who called him Conan the Republican.

Schwarzenegger has reportedly won his first of seven Mr. Olympia title in 1970 with the help of Dianabol. He has admitted to using performance-enhancing anabolic steroids while they were legal, writing in 1977 that “steroids were helpful to me in maintaining muscle size while on a strict diet in preparation for a contest. I did not use them for muscle growth, but rather for muscle maintenance when cutting up.” However, some bodybuilders who used the same steroid cocktails as Schwarzenegger in the 1970s dispute the notion that they were used merely for “muscle maintenance”. Even Schwarzenegger has called the drugs “tissue building.” In 1999, Schwarzenegger sued Dr. Willi Heepe, a German doctor who publicly predicted an early death for the bodybuilder based on a link between steroid use and later heart problems. Because the doctor had never examined him personally, Schwarzenegger collected a DM 20,000 ($12,000 USD) libel judgment against him in a German court. In 1999 Schwarzenegger also sued and settled with Globe Magazine, a U.S. tabloid which had made similar predictions about the bodybuilder’s future health. As late as 1996, a year before open heart surgery to replace an aortic valve, Schwarzenegger publicly defended his use of anabolic steroids during his bodybuilding career. Schwarzenegger and Columbu used profits from their bricklaying venture to start a mail order business, selling bodybuilding and fitness-related equipment and instructional tapes.

Schwarzenegger rolled profits from the mail order business and his bodybuilding competition winnings into his first real estate venture: an apartment building he purchased for $10,000. He would go on to invest in a number of real estate holding companies.

Oliva was born in Cuba on July 4, 1941. At the age of twelve he worked with his father in the sugar cane fields of Guambaco. When Oliva was 16, his father suggested that he enlist in Fulgencio Batista’s army. In the absence of a birth certificate, the recruiting officer took the senior Oliva’s word that his son was old enough to enlist in the fight against communism.

After losing the war to Fidel Castro, Oliva stayed local and took to hanging out at the beach. There he met a fellow sun worshipper who invited him to the local weightlifting club. After just six months of training Oliva was doing clean & jerks with over 300 pounds. Totaling 1000 pounds in the three Olympic lifts at a bodyweight of 195lbs, considered a middle-heavyweight. Because of an injury of the top weightlifter, Alberto R. Games, he was chosen to represent Cuba at the 1962 Central America Games hosted in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1962 the National Weightlifting Championship for Cuba was won by Alberto Rey Games Hernandez; Sergio Oliva took second place. Alberto Games was unable to attend the Central American Games because of an injury.

During his stay in Jamaica, Oliva snuck out of his quarters while the guards were distracted. He ran at top speed until he was safely inside the American consulate. Arriving breathlessly he demanded and received political asylum. Soon, sixty-five other Cuban nationals followed him, including Castro’s entire weightlifting team. Soon afterward, Oliva was living in Miami, Florida working as a TV repairman.

Life in the United States

In 1963 Oliva moved to Chicago, Illinois. There he worked at a local steel mill and began working out at the Duncan YMCA. Working 10-12 hour days at the steel mill and putting in another 2.5–3 hours at the gym gave Oliva very little time for anything else. Soon the bodybuilding grapevine was abuzz with gossip about a Cuban powerhouse who lifted more than any of the local Olympic champs. Oliva won his first bodybuilding competition the Mr. Chicagoland contest in 1963. Then he was successful again at the Mr. Illinois in 1964 but he lost in 1965 at the AAU Jr. Mr. America winning 2nd place even though he won the trophy for “Most Muscular”. In 1966, he won the AAU Jr. Mr. America and again he claimed the trophy for “Most Muscular”. He then joined the International Federation of BodyBuilders IFBB in which he won both the professional Mr. World and Mr. Universe Contests. In 1967 he won the prestigious Mr. Olympia contest, making him the undisputed world champion of bodybuilding.

Oliva then went on to win the Mr. Olympia title three years in a row. At 5 feet 11 inches and at a contest weight that varied between 240-255 lbs, Oliva displayed an unprecedented level of muscle mass,muscular density and definition – including a “V” shape to his large, well-formed upper-body that tapered down to a narrow waist – unlike anything seen in prior competitions. Sergio had the largest arms in contest shape of any Mr. Olympia champion in history. His upper arms measured over 22 1/2 inches unflexed, his massive forearms were 20 1/2 inches cold. His forearms measured as large as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s flexed upper arms, Arthur Jones “of Nautilus fame” measured Arnold’s flexed & pumped upper arms at 19 1/2 inches in 1972 when he was at his most massive weighing around 245. Sergio’s chest measured over 58 inches, his torso tapered down to a tiny 28 inch waist and two huge well-muscled legs measuring 32 inches, followed by huge 22 inch calves. He had a 2 1/2 foot differential between his chest and his waist measurement, which still to this day has not been equaled by any Mr. Olympia champion .[citation needed] Oliva would go on to win the Mr. Olympia competition in 1967, 1968, and 1969. In 1968 he made history by being the only uncontested Mr. Olympia champion. None of the other world champions would face him, none of the bodybuilding legends could challenge him, they all feared the legend of “the Myth.” Arnold Schwarzenegger was a Mr. Universe, Bill Pearl was another Mr. Universe, Frank Zane was Mr. America, Chuck Sipes was Mr. World, Albert Beckles, Dave Draper, Larry Scott, Boyer Coe, Serge Nubret, Reg Park the list goes on and on., – where he would defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger 4 to 3, marking Schwarzenegger’s first and only loss in a Mr. Olympia competition. Schwarzenegger said in his biography the Education of a Bodybuilder that he thought Sergio was so good that he should have won 7 to zero.

Sergio Oliva literally broke the mold, and he broke it in more than one place. One might say he shattered the whole darn thing. After the man of cartoon-like dimensions came on the bodybuilding scene in the ‘60s, normal over-sized musclemen looked with both dazed eyes and vacant stares and said, “What’s the point? Why bother? The bodybuilder from Mars has arrived.”

Thankfully, I met Sergio after winning Mr. America and Mr. Universe, for me the two titles that meant anything in my un-extended competitive career. He could and would be beaten in a contest where subjective opinions were weighed, but who really looked like this creature for basic power, muscle size and density, hardness and symmetry? Another species of animal not yet categorized? He revealed and displayed more than anyone before and anyone since a primitive muscular completeness… and a carriage of grace to belie the brute-ness.

So much for the rugged landscape, the exterior; what about the man? I spent less time with Sergio than I would have liked, as we walked in different neighborhoods, he the street beats of Chicago as a cop and me the sandy beaches of California as a driftwood furniture maker. What we did share in common was obvious: muscles made our jobs easier. “Right what’s wrong” and “fix what’s broke” and “prevent problems” were identifying characteristics that surfaced in our distinctly separate lives.

All bodybuilders connect at some fine place; there’s a bond that unites and, after the dispersal of initial hesitations, a brotherhood is evident, whoever they are and whenever and wherever they meet. Sergio and I won large titles one week in New York City and the world famous contest promoter and magazine publisher had set up a photo studio (free over-ripe bananas and tepid bottled water included) on the fifth floor of a grim industrial building in obscure and littered lower Manhattan. Ten of us, all champions, clogged the ancient textile ruins that once hired twelve-year-olds for small change, I guessed, to weave some man’s fortune. I somehow sensed history repeating itself with larger, older, better-fed kids the subjects of exploitation, another man’s fortune in the making.

“You guys,” shouted the choreographer, director, taskmaster, caterer and provider of small change… the big bologna, “listen to me… put on more oil… pump up… don’t get dirty from the trash on the floor… watch out for broken glass… no, there’s no toilets… Jimmy, be sure you have film in your camera, eh… geez, hurry, you guys, take your pictures so we can go home. I’ll send your return-trip airfare when all the pictures come out and you all look great.”

Oops. I was the first to flip out and cause enough commotion to stop all activity. Lights, camera, action ceased. I was not… how would you say it?… cool, calm and collected… mature. I was frantic. No airfare meant, “Ha, I tricked you again.” In thirty seconds I was dressed in oil-drenched jeans, one shoe on and one off, head sticking through a sleeve hole of my tank top, gagging and clawing for the only remaining century-old, open-shaft elevator in NYC that should be red-tagged by a city safety official. Threats of blood and lawsuits filled the hot, humid and otherwise silent air.

Above the storm, turmoil and hallucinations stood one calm soul… in a pair of bright red posing trunks the size of a band-aid. It was Sergio with a grin and confidence and big arms that pulled me persuasively from the rickety grip of the defunct cargo lift. “Dave, Dave, Dave…” he said, “you can’t go. We’ll get your money now.” “I don’t want it,” I said like spoiled brat with principals all of a sudden. “It’s not worth it, brother. Life’s too short,” insisted the wise policeman, serving and protecting. “And you can’t get in that rusty, broken down, stinky birdcage without me and I’m not dressed for it. Besides, it’s safer to jump.”

The bad and the ugly and the unnecessary went on for an instant before dissolving in halted laughs and relief. Lights, camera and action… The conflict resolved along with my conclusion that this guy is a peacemaker, ten feet tall and growing. Trust him with my life.

Joe Weider’s brainchild of a competition got the perfect first-time winner in Larry. Of all the Hall of Fame inductees, perhaps Scott started with the least raw potential. Told he was too narrow-shouldered – a condition then considered insurmountable – he persevered and packed on prodigious mounds of delt muscle which, coupled with the greatest arms in bodybuilding, enabled him to present front double-biceps shots that worked up a crowd like no other.

Witnesses still say that the audience reaction to his 1966 IFBB Mr. Olympia entrance was the most vociferous and emotional ever seen at a bodybuilding contest. A devout Mormon, Larry lives in Salt Lake City, where he runs his own bodybuilding advisory company.

Only moments earlier, quietly pumping out the last few reps, I was about to step out into the lights.

I couldn’t help but think back, “You’ll never make it Larry. You are too small. Try something else.”

What a change. No longer the skinny little kid from Pocatello Idaho. I now carried 207 lbs of hard muscle. My arms were bigger than most men’s thighs. My deltoids were the size of coconuts. I was ready. The crowds were screaming… “Lar-rie! Lar-rie ! Lar-rie.”

It became a deafening roar. The floor trembled as the fans stomped their impatience. I’m telling you it was something else. The audience response was so incredible, Betty Weider said…

“Never, have I seen anything like it. I have seen all the Mr. Olympia contests Arnold, Lee Haney, Dorian and there has never been the audience response like the night Larry competed in the first Olympia. I was actually afraid they would get out of control. They were screaming and crying, trying to get one last look at Larry”.

Standing on the threshold of my first Mr. Olympia contest, it seemed a lifetime ago…

I was always smaller than my friends. When junior high came along, everyone’s voices got deeper as they matured. Everyone except me. I was still slow in developing everywhere it counted. Gradually I began to grow but I soon realized I’d have to settle for a dismally average physique until something occurred that changed my entire life.

“I’m the one on the right, talk about skinny. You could count my ribs through my pecs”

During the spring of my 16th year, I was weeding and cleaning up the clutter of a winter’s accumulation of junk. I then hauled the whole thing off to the city dump. After having dumped everything, I glanced around to see if there was anything I could scrounge. I noticed a pile of magazines and sauntered over as if I was just stretching my legs. I mean no one wants to get caught taking something from the dump. There was a whole pile of neat magazines like “Field and Stream”, “Outdoor Life” etc. As I sifted through, something caught my eye.

It was a bodybuilding magazine with a shot of an incredibly built human being by the name of George Pain doing a side triceps pose. The photo caption read, “You too, can have an arm like this in 30 days”. His tricep stood out like a banana stuck on there, with little slices running down the length of it.

I had never seen anything like it. Flipping through the magazine… there were several photos of George doing exercises which allegedly built his incredible arms. I drank in every word like a man obsessed.

“I can do these exercises. I’ve got an old tractor axle I can use.” At the time, I didn’t know triceps from biceps but I was going to have those arms and it said, “If you want arms like this, you have to do these exercises.”
Using my tractor axle, I struggled through the strange movements as I experienced my first pump. It was a peculiar tightness like I was growing. Man was I stoked.

By the end of the summer my arms had grown to 12.5 inches. My brain throbbed with the experience. I was actually getting bigger. I told myself, “I am going to train so hard. Nothing is going to stop me.” I felt all my energy focused into a single goal of getting bigger. I knew what I wanted. I wanted to be loved, to be to be admired, looked up to. Now finally, after all these years of being rejected and unrecognized I had found a way to do it.

I could hardly wait for school to start. I worked out like crazy every day with enthusiasm that was miles ahead of my body’s ability to keep pace. I hungered for more growth and size. My self-confidence continued to grow each day as I graduated from the crude contraptions at home to working out at the local YMCA.

By this time I was devouring each issue of “Muscle Builder” magazine. I don’t know whether I was more interested in the workout routines, the physiques or the vision of basking on the beaches in sunny California while beautiful women fought over my incredible physique.

One day it dawned on me if I was going to continue to progress, I would have to leave Idaho and move to California. However, I needed some excuse besides just bodybuilding. It came one day on the back of a pack of matches.

“Earn big bucks in the rising field of electronics,” I read. “Enroll now in California Air College and assure your future. The school was located in Hollywood, California. It was perfect. I could continue my education and at the same time pick up training tips from the champion bodybuilders. After a good selling job on my parents I was on my way.

After a 17 hour train ride, I arrived at Hollywood and Vine. I didn’t have a car but was within walking distance of the school and just a half mile from Bert Goodrich’s Health Club on Hollywood Boulevard.

The place was jammed with trainers of every description but… the guy that took my breath away was Lou Degni. I had never seen anything like him. His chest and back were the most impressive I have ever seen. Even better than the magazines. His waist was 29 inches and his abdominals were an inch deep. His arms taped 19 inches cold at a body weight of 185. On top of all that, he had terrific white teeth and a great looking face. The perfect ladies man.

Here I was, fresh from spud country with a funny looking flat top haircut, weighing in at 150 lbs training alongside Lou Degni.

Lou must have seen something similar to the Zen master who selects a young student from many novices. I couldn’t have shown much promise but… I was dedicated.

Soon after, Lou landed an Italian movie contract and left town so I switched to Vince’s Gym out in San Fernando Valley. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I walked in and there was, Vince, the Iron Guru, sitting behind the desk smoking a funny looking crooked cigar.

“Taken on the roof of Bert Goodrich’s Health Club right about the time I was training with Lou Degni (I’m on the left)”

I started right off with a big mistake. I said, “My name is Larry Scott.” Vince said, “So what.” I was so stunned by his arrogance, I was speechless. It was a bad start but as the years passed, I learned a tremendous amount from Vince about training, posing and nutrition. He was a great teacher and especially good at suggesting rather than insisting.

A few years training under Vince and it was time to enter some California contests. I had won Mr. Idaho a few years before but now I was ready for bigger stuff.

After having placed third in Mr. Los Angeles. A few months later I didn’t have much hope for winning but I tried Mr. California. When it came time to announce the winners, the judges called out the different place positions. I was hoping for at least 5th.

When my name wasn’t called for fifth I felt the show was over for me.
Fourth place was called out. It wasn’t Larry Scott. Chuck Collras, one of the competitors sidled up next to me. “ You’re going to win this thing tonight, Larry.” “No way”, I said not having an inkling of having the slightest chance.

The judges continued calling out the place winners, then finally, “And the winner of Mr. California,…… Larry Scott.” I couldn’t believe it. I wandered out on stage as if in a dream. It was to be the biggest surprise in any contest. I have to admit the main difference was the posing and training advice given by Vince and the nutritional assistance given by Rheo H. Blair. I can’t say enough about Rheo as a person and as an research nutritionist. He was looking into amino acid research before anyone.

“The night I won Mr. California. I was stunned but thrilled.”

Having won Mr. California I was now one step closer to my 11 year dream of winning Mr. America. As Mr. California, I was now in demand for the Weider magazines. I acted casual, but I was more than thrilled. We set up a date for the photo shoot at Venice Beach. This was my first chance to meet Joe Weider, who was to become my long time friend.

After the photo session, Joe took me to lunch and suggested I enter his IFBB Mr. America contest rather than the AAU event and I began from that moment to build a friendship which to this day is one of my most cherished. Our friendship grew as I began to prepare for the Mr. America show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

You know, I can’t help mention that auditorium without feeling a warm feeling. I journeyed from California to New York for 6 straight years competing on that same stage. The finest was the night I won the Olympia. For personal glory, if there really is such a thing, this night was the pinnacle.

Rick Wayne was there that night… I will let him finish the story as he saw it…

“Over the bedlam you heard Bud Parker trying to introduce the contender from California. You heard, “and gen-men…fornia…the incred.. Fractured words that made as much sense as the noise that now filled the auditorium. The amplified voice of the mohair suited “M.C.” was hardly a match for this New York audience that already was too hot for the next star appearance to be reasonable.

“Lar-ree! La-ree! La-ree!” What had gone on before, was nothing compared to this uninhibited display of enthusiasm and star worship. And all this before Scott had set foot on the rostrum. A disturbing look settled on the face of the “M.C.” He turned from the microphone, waved his arms furiously, shouted to someone in the wings, his eyes glazed. “Where’s Scott?” he shrilled. “Where the hell’s Scott!?!” Desperation had by now fully occupied Bud Parker’s liver.

He needn’t have worried. Larry Scott was only a few feet away in the darkest corner of the wings, oiled and pumped up, quietly sensing the mass of hysteria that his coming had triggered in unflappable New York. After such a display, what judge in his right mind would dare to suggest that any of those who had gone before Scott was more deserving of the right to call himself King of Bodybuilders, Champion of Champions? Mr. Olympia!

He mounted the dias and painstakingly positioned himself beneath the overhead amber lamp so that his deltoids, his biceps, his pectorals and his trapezius were heightenedby lights and shadows, a special effect that seemed to instantly add new incredible inches to his earlier monolithic appearance. Now he glided into the first of a series of Scott postures from which he paraded an array of prime meat the like of which had never before visited the human imagination. Great Scott. In 1965 the man was awesome!

“Crowned the King. The first Mr. Olympia”

Scott was beyond compare. At 5’8” he weighed slightly more than 200 pounds, all of it fat free. His arms, from the small-boned wrists to the thick slab that capped his shoulders were perfect in their construction; dense forearms that reminded of tenpins sang in tune with upper arms that were so thick they took your breath away. The flexed Scott biceps, regardless of whether the forearms were extended or bent at shoulder heights were nonpareil; another watershed yet!

Stoically the other contestants awaited the dread Scott decision…

The “M.C.’s” announcement at the end of Larry’s presentation was almost a cliche.
