KABUL, July 23 (Reuters Life!) – Arif Sakhi preened and posed his well-oiled muscles to win the “Mr Afghanistan” crown earlier this year, but behind that perfectly sculpted physique his vital organs were breaking down under the strain of steroid abuse.

Sakhi’s death last month at the age of 26 has shaken Afghanistan’s body building community and shown it is not beyond the reach of the shady billion-dollar business in legal and illegal supplements.

“Unfortunately using illegal supplements has been seen among our young body builders, but we have no resources to stop it,” said Ustaad Bawar Hotak, the head of Afghanistan’s Bodybuilding Federation.

“I always tell any sportsmen to use natural products instead of using dangerous supplements that damage their health.”

Hotak said there was evidence that both professional and amateur body builders in Afghanistan were using imported illegal supplements banned by the national federation.

But Hotak denied “Mr. Afghanistan’s” death was due to using risky supplements, saying Arif Sakhi was poisoned by his rivals — even as fellow body builders said the champion’s liver and kidneys had been devastated by steroids.

“Everyone who prepares themselves for a competition uses steroids and other types of injections for their muscle growth,” said Haroon, working out at the Kabul Gym.

“I do, he does and almost everyone else does,” he said, pointing to other young men working on their physiques in a gym packed with costly workout machines and weights.

The federation says there are over 1,000 gyms in Afghanistan, including at least 200 in the capital, where giant posters of famous musclemen in tiny briefs are a sometimes shocking sight in a society where many women still veil themelves from head to toe in public.

On any given day, Kabul’s gyms attract up to 300 men to work out. There are also around 15 women-only gyms drawing around 1,500 members who wouldn’t have ventured outside without a male companion during the Taliban’s regime, let alone engage in sport. DUBIOUS SUPPLIES

Sport took a back seat in the bloody civil war that followed Soviet occupation in the 1980s, and the hardline Taliban banned most or attached conditions making it impossible to compete.

The country’s amateur boxers, for example, were barred from competitions because the bushy beards they were forced to cultivate under the Taliban absorbed punches.

Looking fit and strong is considered a sign of manliness in Afghan society, particularly among ethnic groups with roots in Central Asia. Many young men pay close attention to their appearance and even in the Pashtun south, some Taliban fighters make-up their eyes with traditional kohl.

“Nowadays bodybuilding has turned into a fashion. By looking fit you can earn respect and even girls’ attention,” said Noor-ul Uda Sherzad, the national trainer.

He said doping was a major problem facing the bodybuilding federation and both professional and amateur bodybuilders in a country where testing system does not even exist.

In Bush Bazaar, named for former President George W. Bush, dozens of shops and stalls sell protein shakes and supplements alongside combat gear and U.S. military clothes that “fell out of a container” on route to U.S. military bases in the country.

“I admit that some of these proteins are not genuine and have been refilled in Pakistan,” said shopkeeper Abdul Mateen.

“But these items have regular customers and are cheap,” he said, pointing to dozens of packets or bottles of outdated protein, creatine and steroids on the floor of his shop.

Mateen said controllers from the ministry of health rarely visit the market, but illegal bodybuilding supplements were not on their checklist anyway.

Calling the supplements a malign foreign influence, Mohammad Nabi, who trains newcomers at a Kabul gym, said there would always be athletes who sought rewards without effort.

“Nearly everyone who goes to the gym is keen to use this in order to get muscle definition before time,” he said.

“(But) some of them can’t read or write and they buy expired drugs that can seriously damage their health within months. Ronnie Coleman To Reveal 2010 Mr. Olympia Plans Live on MuscleSport Radio 7/13

BREAKING NEWS – Eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman will return to the airwaves of MuscleSport Radio on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 from 4 to 5 PM Eastern time to reveal his plans for bodybuilding’s most prestigious show in September. It was just over one year ago that ‘The King’ was our special guest and revealed that he had intentions on making his comeback at the 2010 Mr. Olympia in an attempt to beat Lee Haney’s record.

This will be an exclusive to MuscleSport Mag and MuscleSport Radio. Coleman will let everyone know if he is in fact going to compete again or possibly retire forever from the sport that he once ruled.

It was MuscleSport Radio that first broke the news live on the air that Coleman was going to forego the 2009 Olympia due to travel commitments with BSN and don the posing trunks once again in Las Vegas this year. Not much has been heard from Coleman on the subject since then and we are honored to have him give us the opportunity to once again be the first in the industry to hear of his plans.

“I don’t mess around when it comes to leg training. For me, it’s always been the essentials: squats, leg presses, leg extensions, hack squats and barbell lunges. And I like to stay in that middle range of 8-12 reps, even if it’s leg extensions or lunges. Those aren’t toning exercises to me; they’re all building exercises. I’ll sometimes change the order of the other exercises, but I like to start with squats and end with lunges.”

RIPPED STACK
Bodybuilding is about mass, but it’s not all about mass. You need to keep your bodyfat low to show off your hard-earned mass. Knowing how to stack effective fat burners to get the most burn for your buck is critical for staying big and lean. STRENGTH STACK
Strength is another key area of concern for a bodybuilder. But the amount of weight you can lift isn’t just important for impressing your gym buddies. Being stronger allows you to place more mass-building overload on the muscles you are training every time you go to the gym.

* BETAINE
This supplement, known formally as trimethylglycine, is a metabolite of choline. Betaine has been around for a while, but it was used primarily for promoting health. Betaine can inhibit the production of homocysteine, an amino acid that is associated with a higher risk of cardio vascular disease. Preventing the body from forming homocysteine also encourages greater creatine production. This is why a few manufacturers add betaine to the creatine they produce. University of Connecticut (Storrs) researchers were the first to discover that betaine is an effective strength supplement. Under their watch, 12 trained men received either betaine or a placebo for two weeks while following a strength training program. They reported at the 2007 annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine that when the subjects took betaine, their bench press strength was boosted by about 25%, while their power on the bench press increased by about 15%.

* TAURINE
This amino acid has been used as a supplement to boost muscle strength for a few years. Research shows that higher levels of taurine in muscle cells are associated with greater muscle strength and muscle endurance. Investigations have also demonstrated that when taurine in muscle fibers is decreased, as happens during exercise, so too is the strength of those muscle fibers. Little is known about how it enhances performance, except that increasing its levels in muscle somehow seems to boost muscular contractions, and this leads to greater muscle strength.

* WHEAT GERM
This innermost layer of the wheat kernel stores most of the protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals found in wheat. Yet, wheat germ is not just a great source of slow-digesting carbs for a preworkout meal. Its active ingredient octacosanol is an alcohol that makes up the main component of wax in plants. Research studies confirm that octacosanol supplements boost muscle strength and muscle endurance, as well as enhance reaction time in athletes. Octacosanol increases the ability of the nerves that control muscle contractions to fire faster and more synchronously, which allows for faster and stronger muscle contractions and therefore greater muscle strength.

STACK THEM LIKE THIS
Add 1,000-1,500 milligrams of betaine, 1-3 g of taurine and about 1/2 cup of wheat germ to your preworkout protein shake (taken within 30 minutes prior to training). Add 1,000-1,500 mg of betaine and 1-3 g of taurine to your postworkout protein shake (taken within 30 minutes after training).

Sylvester Stallone Pudding Lawsuit

Do any of you remember the supplement company Sylvester Stallone started a few years back? Yes, The Italian Stallion was in the supplement biz not too long ago! His line called “Instone” was supposed to be the next big thing and he hired some of the top supplement industry insiders like Vince Andrich, Ryan Hornbuckle and Rehan Jalali. He had a fat burner, MRP, testosterone booster, protein powder and a protein packed pudding! This stuff was damn tasty too, with 20 g of protein per serving and just 2 grams of carbs! Perfect for a small snack on the go. According to industry sources, the pudding was selling like crazy. This lawsuit is REALLY confusing but this is what seems to have went down:

Step 1: Brescia Makes “Pro Pak Pudding”

Back in 1999, a man named “Brescia” made an innovative low-carb pudding with the help of a food scientist named “Christopher Scinto”. He called his formula “Pro Pudding Pak”. In 2003, he then signed a contract with a factory called “Performance Worldwide USA, Inc.” to manufacture the special pudding. He also did a deal with supplement company “Instone” to take on the sale and distribution of the pudding under their brand name “Sylvester Stallone Low Carb Pudding”. Seemed like a great deal for everyone!

Step 2: Employee Runs Off With The Product Idea?

A guy named Keith Angelin was working at the factory set to make the special pudding (Performance Worldwide USA, Inc.). One day he decided to pick leave the company at and start his own business. He called his new company “Freedom Foods, Inc.” But somehow he also was able to team up with “Instone” (who as mentioned were set to take on the sales and distribution of the special pudding Brescia made for them) and the original food scientist Christopher Scinto. In the end, the team cut Bescia right out of the picture! According to reports, they conspired to steal Brescia’s ideas, and began producing and selling a pudding based on Brescia’s formula and business plan.

Step 3: Brescia Calls Out Keith Angelin

Brescia must have been pissed. So at an industry trade show, he accused Keith Angelin of stealing his idea for the special pudding! But for doing that, Keith actually sued Brescia for trade libel and other claims! Yes, if you know the legal system well, you can make someone’s life miserable.

Stallone Under Fire?

Sylvester Stallone must face deposition questions and must turn over financial documents from their former company in the lawsuit alleging they misappropriated trade secrets. Sylvester Stallone:

“Promised to use his significant financial resources to market and produce the product and to place his company’s distinctive name… on the label,” Brescia alleges.

Stallone Maintains: Nothing Special About The Pudding?

Ads for the pudding referred to as “Sylvester Stallone Low Carb Pudding,” and featured him in the ads. But Stallone maintains that there is nothing special about the pudding and that Brescia’s lawyers cannot show how it differs from the general knowledge of those in the same field developing similar products. Even though Brescia paid $100,000 to a lab to develop a working formula for his product and in July 2003 signed a contract with “Performance World Wide USA” to license and market the pudding, according to court papers.

Brescia Awarded $4.9 Million Dollars

In September 2008, the company “Instone” was found jointly liable with Keith Angelin and the food scientist
Christopher Scinto. As a result, the jury awarded $4.9 million to Brescia! But apparently this war is not over! Where will this case go from here? Will Stallone knock out Brescia and take all the pudding for himself? Will Brescia use his court winnings to launch his own hollywood movie and take on Stallone on the big screen? Will Scott Welch wear a wig and become a TV show host for The People’s Court and get out the supplement business all together?
